Popular messaging platform WhatsApp is rolling out a key update for its Android users by adding a dedicated “Parent controls” entry point directly within the app’s main settings screen. This change aims to make its existing safety tools significantly more accessible and easier for parents to configure.
While Meta-owned WhatsApp originally launched parent-managed accounts earlier this year in March, the setup options were previously buried deep within the menu structure, leading many families to miss out on the feature. By placing a primary entry point on the main settings screen, WhatsApp is bringing essential safety settings to the forefront.
How WhatsApp’s Parental Controls Work
- Seamless Account Linking:
- Parents can navigate to WhatsApp Settings and tap the new “Parent controls” option.
- Following the on-screen instructions, parents can open the same section on their child’s device to link the two accounts together.
- To prevent unauthorized access, the setup includes a strict verification process to confirm the guardian’s identity before linking.
- Managing Unknown Message Requests:
- Once linked, messages sent to the child by unknown contacts are automatically redirected to a separate inbox titled “Requests.”
- Parents can review and either approve or reject these incoming requests directly from their own devices.
- Complete Transparency for Minors:
- The feature is designed with clear visibility for young users. Children will see a notification in their app indicating that their account is linked to a parent’s device, ensuring complete transparency regarding oversight.
Privacy & Security: What Parents Can and Cannot See
Despite adding parental oversight capabilities, WhatsApp continues to enforce its strict End-to-End Encryption (E2EE) policy.
| Feature Category | What Parents CAN See | What Parents CANNOT See |
| Account Activity | Notifications when new contacts are added | Private chat conversations |
| Settings & Requests | Changes made to account settings | Sent and received text messages |
| Safety Oversight | Incoming message requests from unknown numbers | Audio and video call logs or streams |
Availability and Rollout Status
The new entry point was discovered in the WhatsApp Beta for Android (version 2.26.29.5) update on the Google Play Store.
WhatsApp is deploying the updated settings interface via a phased rollout. While currently available to select beta testers, the dedicated Parental Controls section is expected to expand to all standard Android users in the coming weeks.
